Why Training and Development Saves Money

Training and Development

Training and development can be one of the most neglected aspects in management. Most employers onboard staff and set them free in the workforce. This leaves them with the burden of development, advancement, and more.

There’s just one problem with this: Employees want to be developed. If you don’t take the time to do so, you’re likely to lose a lot of young talent.

If this is the case, why do so many employers ignore proper training and development? What are the gains of paying credence to the practice aside from retaining more employees?

Three Reasons Why Employee Development is Ignored

Employee training and development is typically ignored for three reasons:

  1. Employers Care About the Present Most – A business is hard-pressed for time. Before they can think about the future, they care about the present. Day-to-day operations often supplant other goals out of necessity. In addition, staff development suffers as a result.
  2. The Processes Are There But Not Implemented – Some businesses have policies and processes in place for training and development. However, they’re either ill-developed or simply pushed to the wayside. This is commonly in favour of getting more work done during the day.
  3. There Aren’t Enough Hours in the Day – While companies can make time for development, many use time constraints as an excuse.

Three Reasons You Shouldn’t Ignore Employee Development Any Longer

There is a reason staff leave if they aren’t offered training and development. It makes good business sense to plan for development processes because:

Employees Care About Your Business if You Care About Them – If you show a genuine interest in employees, they’re going to care more about your business. This interest is invaluable because it translates into more investment in the workplace. It also highlights efforts to achieve goals.

  1. The Processes Build Loyalty and Boost Productivity – This is a logical extension of the reason above but is worth reinforcing. If your business takes an interest in staff, it only makes sense that they will be more loyal to your business. If staff feels loyal, they’ll likely feel more engaged. In addition, if they feel more engaged, they’ll be more productive.
  2. Employees Appreciate Your Support – Young workers are talented, but employees with less training have a long road of improvement ahead. This can be through experience, and more. Capable and young staff want you to train them. They also want you to offer them a mentor, and otherwise coach them to meet their full potential.

It’s important to remember that employee development doesn’t have to be time-consuming, or costly. This is especially true if you work with an agency skilled in employee development initiatives.
